Typical spring types include:
- Compression springs – coiled wire compresses together creating resistance returning to its original shape when released; standard shapes include conical, barrel and hourglass
- Extension (tension) springs – wire connected at both ends to other components where coiled wire is pulled apart creating resisting force
- Torsion springs – wire spring rotates around an axis with ends attached to two components to create resisting force as the spring is wound
