Retaining rings are installed around a cylinder or inside a shaft forming a shoulder or ridge to retain other components.  Most rings are installed in a pre-formed groove however some rings are self-locking and do not require a groove.

O-rings are used as sealing devices to prevent fluid leaks or maintain a vacuum seal.  Installed in a groove, O-rings are compressed between two components and are designed to function in moving or non-moving applications. O-rings, measured in size by the internal dimension (id), outer dimension (od) and cross section/thickness (cs).
